The Gift of Fitness Program

What is Gift of Fitness?

Gift of Fitness is a nonprofit organization offering fitness center memberships and nutrition education at no cost to low-income women. Our service area includes parts of Northwestern Lake and Northeastern McHenry Counties within ten miles of Fox Lake, IL.

How can I get involved?

You can become involved with Gift of Fitness by volunteering, donating and attending events. You can also help by telling others about Gift of Fitness!

Volunteers can be a part of Gift of Fitness by hosting or helping with events, serving on committees and initiating community partnerships. Persons with any kind of special expertise are always welcome to call. Health care professionals, personal trainers, and certified instructors in specialties such as Pilates or Zumba® Fitness may be able to serve the community here.

Donation opportunities include one-time donations, recurring monthly donations, honoring a special person with a tribute or memorial gift, bequests, and sponsoring a woman. Businesses can become involved by sponsoring an event.

Please contact us for ways you can help that will fit your schedule and needs.

Can I sponsor a woman?

Sponsorship is a wonderful way to help a woman break free from the cycle of poor health, obesity, employment discrimination and low income. Monthly and annual sponsorships are available.

How do I become a community partner?

Please contact us by email or phone for more information about partnerships, referrals, or sponsor opportunities.

I don’t have money to give. What else can I do?

There are many ways in which you can help Gift of Fitness as a volunteer. Contact us for ways to help that will fit your schedule. And you can always help by spreading the word about Gift of Fitness.

What are your sources of funding?

Gift of Fitness is funded through private donations. In addition, we are actively seeking corporate, foundation and government grants as well as business sponsorships.

All donations work to directly benefit local women and impact the communities in which Gift of Fitness operates.

Donations & Automatic Giving Options

Are my donations tax deductible?

Yes, donations to Gift of Fitness are tax deductible.  Gift of Fitness is a 501(c)3 and your donations are tax deductible.

What is a Memorial Gift? What is a Tribute Gift?

A memorial gift is a way of honoring a person who has passed away, by making a donation in the person’s name. This can be a one-time gift or a recurring donation. A tribute gift is in honor of a person who is still living.

For memorial gifts and tribute gifts, a recognition certificate will be mailed to the honoree or their family. Memorial and tribute gifts are wonderful ways to honor a person, because they make a difference in a way that is important to the honoree.

When will my credit card first be charged?

Once you sign up for the Gift of Fitness Automatic Giving Program, your first donation will occur in the next month on the 1st of the month.

Will I receive verification of my donations for tax purposes?

All donations are acknowledged with an annual statement in January of each year. Please contact us by phone or email if you would like to receive an acknowledgement after each donation.

What do I receive with my donation?

You will receive information about the impact of your sustaining gifts through our quarterly newsletter and our email updates.

How will my donation be used?

Your donation will be used to support Gift of Fitness and our mission to provide physical fitness and nutrition education opportunities to low-income women.

Unless otherwise specified, your consistent support will be used toward the general operating expenses of the organization.

How can I stop my monthly donations?

You can cancel your monthly gifts – or adjust your monthly amount – at any time. Just contact us by phone or email.

How are candidates for membership selected?

Candidates who meet the income and residence requirements are selected based on an in-person interview which ensures the program can serve their needs. The number of available slots is limited, so candidates may be put on a waiting list.

What are the member’s responsibilities?

Members have minimum attendance requirements. We collect monthly weight and measurement information, and we request that participants complete surveys periodically.

We expect participants to inform us if their eligibility status changes due to increased income. We also trust them to inform us of any health change that would require a limitation in physical activity.

Why do you have minimum attendance requirements?

Minimum attendance requirements allow us to offer memberships to the largest number of women while ensuring that the program is doing the greatest good for the entire community.

Will the other members know I am a charity membership?

Only the staff and board of Gift of Fitness will know who the subsidized members are, and we will not reveal this information unless that is the member’s choice. All members will be treated the same.

Do you have childcare available?

No, at this time we do not have childcare available and our facilities are not set up to provide a suitable environment for children.
